University of Cape Town Government Vacancies 2022 :LECTURER- CELLULAR NEUROSCIENCE (3-year contract)

The Department of Human Biology, a vibrant multidisciplinary department in the Faculty of Health Sciences, is seeking to
appoint a lecturer within the Division of Cell Biology for a full-time 3-year contract.

The Division of Cell Biology is a dynamic and active discipline which is responsible for delivering lectures and
tutorials/practicals to undergraduate MBChB, Health and Rehabilitation, and BSc students as well as to BMedSc(Hons) and
other post-graduate students. Its members are engaged in research that encompasses diverse approaches to
understanding normal cellular processes and how they are altered in disease. This includes the study of cellular signalling
in the nervous system, neurodevelopment and cancer amongst others. The Department has well-equipped modern
molecular, cell biology and neurophysiology laboratories, with excellent cell culture and microscopy facilities. The
Department has strong research links with the University of Cape Town’s Neuroscience Institute. The Department also
hosts a large number of postdoctoral research fellows, and has a vibrant and diverse postgraduate student community.


• A minimum academic qualification of a PhD in neuroscience, cellular neuroscience, neurophysiology or a related
• Experience in teaching neurophysiology, cellular neuroscience, cell biology and histology.
• A track record of publishing research outputs.
• Relevant postdoctoral experience.
• A research interest in neuroscience and/or cellular neuroscience.
• Indication of leadership and/or engagement in social responsiveness activities.


• Teaching
– Teach appropriate undergraduate and honours courses in cellular neuroscience, neurophysiology, cell biology,
histology and physiology to BMedSc(Hons), MBChB and Science students.
– Co-supervise post-graduate students (BMedSc(Hons), MSc and PhD).
• Research
– Help execute research projects related to neuroscience and/or cell biology.
• Leadership, management and administration
– Convene the Neuroscience and Physiology stream of the BMedSc(Hons) programme.
– Perform leadership, management and administrative functions related to teaching and research at Divisional,
Departmental, Faculty and, if needed, University level.
• Social responsiveness
– Translate research findings into the community, for the benefit of the public, where relevant.
– Initiate social responsiveness activities.

The annual remuneration package for 2022, including benefits is between R601 928 and R805 385.
